Sex, sex, sex...how does sex sell? Why is sex so integral to this economy? Why are all the "hot guys" assholes and the beautiful women cold-as-ice? I will attempt to answer these difficult questions looking through the microscope that is economics.
From magazines to movies the public encounters a barage of sex portrayed using beautiful stars. The American economy enjoys gains in the billions of dollars thanks to this phenomenon. The public, especially women, are looking to improve their worth or their value with these billions of dollars. This is due to the high value Americans place on appearance and wealth. The dream which once thrived exuberantly in the hearts of millions in this counrty was to win the heart of someone from the opposite sex -- a manly man or a stunning woman -- and wisk them off to a place where only happy endings reside. Changing along with the times are the standards placed upon beauty and masculinity. It has become very difficult to be considered beautiful; almost as difficult as being deemed an eligible bachelor. In order to reach this level of acceptance in society a large amount of money needs to be inserted directly into the economy. The following will be an economic analogy to explain all areas of this topic.
For this example value will be equated with appearance in the case for women. For men, value will be equated with appearance and wealth. The free trade market will be the social market where men and women meet to commence trading* or eternal joint ventures. I know what your thinking, why aren't women valued by their wealth? Because unless your name is Kevin Federline, the odds on a broke-ass nobody marrying a hot and wealthy woman ranges from never-gonna-happen to in-your-dreams.
Men who are of high value in this free market are in high demand. Most likely they have been of high value their entire lives. Knowing their own value, males will only make a trade if they are to receive goods which are of higher value than their selling cost. The selling cost is the amount of money put into their appearance or amount of effort put forth to attain wealth. Therefore, in order for a trade to take place a woman of high value needs to make a bid in the amount that will satisfy the male asking price. How the American man acquires knowledge of his market value is through experience in the market. He will make frivelous attempts to offer bids to women most valued in the market until he comes across a low enough asking price where his bid will produce a trade. On occasion the trade will be above or below the equilibrium value, but after years of selling and buying he will stay along his market equilibrium.
The same procedure is necessary for a woman to figure out her value. Ways to increase value is through cosmetic products, clothing, weight loss supplements, and the list goes on... literally it goes on forever. This is the reason commerce is geared towards selling sex and why the economy thrives on it. TV ads have beautiful women atop fancy cars and lavish living items because these are the things that men can buy. Maybe if they possess the car then the women in those commercials will come with it. Once both male and female have acquired a certain amount of value, they will no longer even consider mediocre bids. This is how the D-bag/Tool and the cold-heart are developed.
As long marriages ceased to be arranged prior to birth, the law of demand will control this free trade market.
trade*= sex
I really like this post! I have a question for the author though. How does the naturally attractivce woman and naturally good-looking man (who inherited his wealth without putting forth effort) fit into this equation? In these insances, the cost of beauty is very low, so the matching benefit may very well be equally as low also. So why don't we see more naturally beautiful-looking people matched up with equally low cost not-so-good-looking people in our economics of shallow American dating?
ReplyDeleteThis post was really creative, and mostly true. How does a man know what is worth is to other beautiful women? He doesn’t, he could think he is set by having all the wealth, materials, and power in the world. But, not every beautiful girl may be looking for that. What if the girl just wants a guy who is down to earth and not arrogant? I don’t think it’s fair to say that every beautiful girl is looking for that one type of “perfect guy”. She might not be so interested in wealth and materials; she just might want a nice guy.
